Set out for Punakha with a scenic drive over the Dochu-La Pass, (at 3,100 meters). On clear days, this route offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. As you descend into the lush Punakha Valley, the journey takes about three hours, providing a captivating glimpse into the everyday life in one of the world's most remote kingdoms. The Dochu-La area is renowned for its vast rhododendron forests, which bloom in late April and early May, painting the mountains with vibrant spring colors.

Upon arriving in Punakha, you will visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, known as the "Palace of Great Happiness." Built in 1637 by the Shabdrung, the unifier of Bhutan, this impressive fortress is strategically situated at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers. Serving as the winter residence for the Je Khenpo and hundreds of monks, Punakha Dzong is an architectural marvel. The three-story main temple boasts four intricately carved entrance pillars, adorned with gold and silver decorations. Notably, this dzong was the site where Bhutan’s first king was crowned in 1907.

After lunch, take a leisurely walk to Chimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the Divine Madman. Renowned for his unconventional teachings and lifestyle, he challenged orthodox Buddhism and emphasized that true religion is an inner feeling, not confined to monastic life. The temple is also a symbol of fertility, attracting childless couples who come seeking blessings.
