The most daring camp trek into the Himalayas. Whether you want the highest Himalayan passes, snowcapped mountains and cross glaciers, or explore charming villages amid old-growth forests, Rolwaling will both surprise and delight the beginning and experienced trekker.
For this adventurous, but technical not difficult trek we go visit a part of the Great Himalayan Trail that is in the Everest region, locally known as the Khumbu. The Sherpa people of the Khumbu are so closely associated with the trekking business that the name Sherpa is also given to a specific role on a trekking team. West of it lies Rolwaling Himal, home to Tamang, Sherpa, eastern Gurung and the indigenous Thami people. Rolwaling Himal is less known as a touristic trekking area although it is rich in plant and bird species and wildlife including red panda, black bear and leopard cat. It offers the chance to learn in more unique ways about how Hinduism, Buddhism and Shamanism and how they have blended together over time. The area is often overlooked by tour companies, despite the culturally diverse and challenging trekkings that can be made here.
Trekking in Rolwaling is one of Nepal’s finest high mountain valleys west of the Khumhu, directly on the Tibetan frontier. “Rolwaling”, which is called simply “the grave” by the indigenous Sherpa’s on account of its location – buried down between steep ice-giants. Many mysterious stories have been passed on about this valley. Through which the forefathers of the present-day Sherpa’s once came. It is here that the notorious Yeti is supposed to make his home.
It is here we start our adventurous Rolwaling trek and summit the Yalung Ri at 5.630 meters, trek along the Trakarding Glacier and pass one of the most intriguing passes in Nepal: Tashi Lapcha at an altitude of almost 6.000 meters. We come and see the Tashi Labsta which has a reputation for rapid and extreme weather changes, caution should be exercised at all times. Ropes and ice climbing gear are required for ascent and descent, just for security reasons, so no climbing skills and experience are needed, so as long as you are fit and follow the instructions of our guides, you are welcome to join us. The itinerary will take you across passes, you will really summit a mountain, cross glaciers, see charming villages amid old-growth forests and end up in enchanting Namche Bazaar at the route to Mount Everest. We walk and fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu.
The trek is strenuous and prior trekking experience is preferred. Our program is fully planned and supported by a team of professional and experienced crew members, including guides, kitchen staff, and other support crew, like the sherpa’s.
This trip will be certain when the group has at least 6 participants.

After all impressions you probably end up early in your bed! But you can of course visit one of the many restaurants Kathmandu holds or have a nice drink. You spent the night in a good midrange hotel in Kathmandu.
Early rise for a lovely breakfast in the hotel and then it's time to visit Pashupatinath- the most venerated Hindu temple of Nepal and Boudhnath, the biggest Buddhist stupa architecture of the world. It really will impress you for sure. In the afternoon the trip continues to the famous sightseeing of Bhaktapur and Patan -the principalities of the Kathmandu valley. You will visit old royal palaces, temples, stupas, and monasteries and will see lots of striking intricate wood and stone works. In the late afternoon we return to your hotel in Kathmandu.
From Kathmandu, we head by private car northeast on the Friendship Highway which connects Kathmandu with Lhasa. A Lamosangu, we leave the Friendship Highway and take another way to Jiri. Earlier the motor able road used to be only upto Dolakha. But nowadays because of the Tamakoshi hydropower construction works, we can drive upto Shigati. From Shigati we trek to Suri Dobhan for our overnight stay.
We start our trek along the river, and then continue on the flat land. We cross several streams and jungles with varieties of orchid, rhododendron and other vegetation. Cross the suspension bridge to reach Jagat, a small town with people of different ethnicities.
At first, we follow the normal flat path, and then the trail ascends and descends through the jungle. The trail follows the river bank. As the valley narrows, we cross the suspension bridge over the river. A steep climb takes us to the Sherpa village of Simigaon, spread on the terrace of the mountainside. The village is mostly inhabited by Buddhists and there are also a few Hindus.
We pass by a few more Sherpa settlements. On a clear morning the views of Gaurishankar above the Rolwaling Valley are fascinating. From the ridge top at Simigaun , we continue towards the Rolwaling Valley. The trail climbs a rocky, wooded ridge with beautiful pine forests. Descent again to the river of Rolwaling Khola.
Our trail ascends uphill through different varieties of plants and Rhododendron trees. Continue along the left bank of the Rolwaling Khola. Continuing along the deep river valley, we arrive at a tributary river from Gaurishankar. Enjoy the unfolding views of the Gaurishankar. The trail rises further until we come across an easy and relatively flat terrain. Finally, we arrive at the Sherpa village of Beding, located by the river.
An easy walk along the norther bank of the Rolwaling River begins our today's trek. We pass across the summer village of Beding, several yaks grazing and people busy in their fields of buckwheat and barley. The crest line formed by the 6000ers such as Chekigo, Bamango, and Konyklemo rise on the immediate left of the village. We arrive at a monastery believed to be a meditative place of the Buddhist Guru Padma Sambhava. Walking along the valley floor, we finally reach the summer village of Na surrounded by potato fields.
The morning is precious stone clear with a deep blue sky. We will go to Yalung Ri Base Camp at 4.700 meters and back for acclimatization. We slowly move up, and this is not easy, a steep narrow trail, at times across boulders. At the Yalung Ri Base Camp we have lunch. The sun is fierce and feels warm and we all take a nap off fighting a headache, making an effort to acclimatize. This is a very scenic spot, a nice view at the valley of Na and glaciers and moraines around us.
We start prepare in night and start before sunrise to ensure our summiting by morning and enjoy our victory in a spectacular sight on top of the Yalung Ri. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, ropes and ice climbing gear are required for ascent and descent, for security reasons, and also you may need crampons under your trekking shoes!
REST DAY IN NA, O/N IN CAMP
At first trek through the leveled plane and gradually ascend to witness the Himalayan Lake filled with the chilling water of the glaciers. The views of Menlung and Tibetan Side Mountains add glory to the unfolding vista. We trek along the right bank of the river and then cross the river to climb up the rocky lateral moraine of the Glacier. We then walk to Tso Rolpa for the night.
Early morning trek to head toward Trakarding glacier. Walk past the glaciers throughout the day and explore the beauty of the surrounding. The trail will still be ascending through some rock climbing and a gradual walk on the glacier moraine, occasionally passing rocks overhangs.
The walk follows high slopes above the glacier to avoid the lower section, but further up we have to trek along the center on the hard rocky glacier. Steady walk leads us to the lowest point of the icefall and then climbing to the easiest point to gain the Drolambau glacier. Here we will be surrounded by superb high mountain scenery. Continuing further downhill, we camp at Tashi Lapcha Pedi Camp at the foot of Tashi Lapcha, surrounded by absolutely grandiose mountains over 6000m with 360 degree panorama.
Continue trekking to Trashi Lapcha Pass (5755m). From the pass, the view of senior Khumbu peaks is magnificent. Some hundred meter downhill trek under overhanging rock, we camp at a superb location, with magnificent sunset views.
Today you will be experiencing a bit easy walking, the walk from here will be enjoyable most of the way to Thame. A gradual descend brings us to Thame Village, the first hint of civilization since Beding. There is a very old and interesting Monastery at the upper end of the village. Now you have a glimpse of first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru.
At Thame, the old trade route over the Nangpa-la into Tibet branches North, following the Bhote Koshi, which incidentally is the 2-3 river so named on this trek. The trail descends gently at first and then steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga. Passing by several villages and numerous teashops, the trail ascends steeply to Sanasa where local Sherpa people sell the Tibetan goods. The way from Sanasa to Namche has small ups and downs with view of forests, scenery and mountains.
The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. Although we are travelling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance snow covered peaks. We walk through the Sherpa villages' noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages.
