The most daring camp trek into the Himalayas. Whether you want the highest Himalayan passes, snowcapped mountains and cross glaciers, or explore charming villages amid old-growth forests, Rolwaling will both surprise and delight the beginning and experienced trekker.

For this adventurous, but technical not difficult trek we go visit a part of the Great Himalayan Trail that is in the Everest region, locally known as the Khumbu. The Sherpa people of the Khumbu are so closely associated with the trekking business that the name Sherpa is also given to a specific role on a trekking team. West of it lies Rolwaling Himal, home to Tamang, Sherpa, eastern Gurung and the indigenous Thami people. Rolwaling Himal is less known as a touristic trekking area although it is rich in plant and bird species and wildlife including red panda, black bear and leopard cat. It offers the chance to learn in more unique ways about how Hinduism, Buddhism and Shamanism and how they have blended together over time.  The area is often overlooked by tour companies, despite the culturally diverse and challenging trekkings that can be made here.

Trekking in Rolwaling is one of Nepal’s finest high mountain valleys west of the Khumhu, directly on the Tibetan frontier. “Rolwaling”, which is called simply “the grave” by the indigenous Sherpa’s on account of its location – buried down between steep ice-giants. Many mysterious stories have been passed on about this valley. Through which the forefathers of the present-day Sherpa’s once came. It is here that the notorious Yeti is supposed to make his home.

It is here we start our adventurous Rolwaling trek and summit the Yalung Ri at 5.630 meters, trek along the Trakarding Glacier and pass one of the most intriguing passes in Nepal: Tashi Lapcha at an altitude of almost 6.000 meters. We come and see the Tashi Labsta which has a reputation for rapid and extreme weather changes, caution should be exercised at all times. Ropes and ice climbing gear are required for ascent and descent, just for security reasons, so no climbing skills and experience are needed, so as long as you are fit and follow the instructions of our guides, you are welcome to join us. The itinerary will take you across passes, you will really summit a mountain, cross glaciers, see charming villages amid old-growth forests and end up in enchanting Namche Bazaar at the route to Mount Everest. We walk and fly back from Lukla to Kathmandu.

The trek is strenuous and prior trekking experience is preferred. Our program is fully planned and supported by a team of professional and experienced crew members, including guides, kitchen staff, and other support crew, like the sherpa’s.

This trip will be certain when the group has at least 6 participants.

Ropes and ice climbing gear are required for ascent and descent, just for security reasons, so no climbing skills and experience are needed, so as long as you are fit and follow the instructions of our guides, you are welcome to join us.

We slowly move up, and this is not easy, a steep narrow trail, at times across boulders. At the Yalung Ri Base Camp we have lunch. The sun is fierce and feels warm and we all take a nap off fighting a headache, making an effort to acclimatize. This is a very scenic spot, a nice view at the valley of Na and glaciers and moraines around us.

Today you will be experiencing a bit easy walking, the walk from here will be enjoyable most of the way to Thame. A gradual descend brings us to Thame Village, the first hint of civilization since Beding. There is a very old and interesting Monastery at the upper end of the village. Now you have a glimpse of first really good views of the great peaks of the Khumbu including Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru.

At Thame, the old trade route over the Nangpa-la into Tibet branches North, following the Bhote Koshi, which incidentally is the 2-3 river so named on this trek. The trail descends gently at first and then steeply to a bridge over the river Dudh Koshi at Phunki Tenga. Passing by several villages and numerous teashops, the trail ascends steeply to Sanasa where local Sherpa people sell the Tibetan goods. The way from Sanasa to Namche has small ups and downs with view of forests, scenery and mountains.

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast flowing Dudh Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. Although we are travelling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance snow covered peaks. We walk through the Sherpa villages' noticing impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages.
