Nestled on the western slopes of Nepal, the Lower Dolpo Trek offers an exceptional trekking experience, revealing one of Nepal's hidden gems. Away from the hustle and bustle of urban areas, this trek leads adventurers to the tranquil Shey Phoksundo Lake, perched at an elevation of 3,611 meters. Known for its stunning turquoise waters, Shey Phoksundo Lake is one of Nepal's most beautiful lakes and is situated within Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest national park in the country. Surrounded by towering hills and with the majestic Mt. Kanjiroba in the distance, this trek promises a truly immersive natural experience.
The cultural richness of the Lower Dolpo Region is heavily influenced by Tibetan traditions. The Lower Dolpo Trek offers encounters with pre-Buddhist Bon Po and Chaiba civilizations, providing a unique cultural experience. Annual festivals and events near the lake draw pilgrims from around the world, showcasing a diverse set of values and worldviews. Throughout the trek, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, including the Annapurna range (8,091 m), Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Mt. Api (7,132 m), Mt. Nilgiri, and Kagmara Ri (5,115 m). The Lower Dolpo Trek also features stunning arid alpine scenery, making it a visual feast for trekkers.
The Lower Dolpo Trek, open to hikers since 1991, is one of Nepal's most challenging treks, located on the northern side of the Himalayas behind the Dhaulagiri peak. The best times to do this trek are from early March to early May and from August to October, when the views are clear, wildflowers bloom, and the fresh Himalayan air is invigorating. Despite being a monsoon trek due to the region's minimal rainfall, it demands strong physical stamina and health, with daily walks of six to seven hours and multiple high pass crossings. Starting with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then to Juphal, the 18-day trek passes through terraced farms, small gorges, picturesque villages, and high passes like Numa La (5,190 m) and Baga La (5,070 m), culminating at the beautiful Phoksundo Lake before returning to Juphal for the flight back to Kathmandu.
