Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek is an 18-day wilderness journey into one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan regions, combining dramatic high-altitude landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist and Bon culture, and the turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake. Far from Nepal’s busier trekking trails, Lower Dolpo offers a genuine expedition-style experience through isolated villages, deep river valleys and the protected landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Starting with flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Juphal, the trek follows the classic route through Dunai, Tarakot and Dho Tarap before crossing two demanding Himalayan passes: Numa La (5,309 m) and Baga La (5,169 m). The trail then descends toward beautiful Ringmo village and Shey Phoksundo Lake before returning to Juphal.

Because reliable teahouse accommodation is not available throughout this remote route, Himalayan Dream Team operates the trek as a fully supported camping journey from Day 3 to Day 15, with an experienced trekking crew, camping equipment and freshly prepared meals. With a dedicated acclimatization day in Dho Tarap and a contingency day in Kathmandu, the itinerary is designed for trekkers seeking a challenging, well-organized adventure in one of Nepal’s least-travelled regions.

Lower Dolpo Trek Difficulty

The Lower Dolpo Trek is a strenuous high-altitude trek involving long walking days, remote wilderness and two major Himalayan passes. The main challenges are crossing Numa La (5,309 m) and Baga La (5,169 m), where altitude, cold, wind and changing mountain weather can make progress demanding.

No technical climbing skills are required, but good physical fitness and previous high-altitude trekking experience are strongly recommended. An acclimatization day at Dho Tarap helps prepare for the higher sections of the route.

Flights to Lower Dolpo – Kathmandu, Nepalgunj & Juphal

The Lower Dolpo Trek is accessed by domestic flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and onward to Juphal, the main air gateway to Dolpo. The same route is used for the return journey.

RouteApprox. Flight Time
Kathmandu → Nepalgunj50–60 minutes
Nepalgunj → Juphal25–35 minutes
Juphal → Nepalgunj25–35 minutes
Nepalgunj → Kathmandu50–60 minutes

Flights between Nepalgunj and Juphal are weather-dependent, and delays or cancellations are possible. For this reason, Day 17 is kept as a contingency day in Kathmandu.

Best Time for the Lower Dolpo Trek

The best time for the Lower Dolpo Trek is generally March to May and September to October, with May–June and September–October particularly suitable for our high-pass camping itinerary. These periods usually offer more favorable conditions for trekking and crossing the high passes.

Dolpo lies partly in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, receiving considerably less monsoon rainfall than many other trekking regions of Nepal. However, the southern approaches around Juphal and Shey Phoksundo can still receive summer rain, and mountain flights may occasionally be affected by weather.

SeasonTypical ConditionsRecommendation
Spring (March–May)Milder temperatures and generally good trekking conditionsRecommended
Early Summer (June)Warmer weather with possible rain on the southern approachesGood
Autumn (September–October)Generally clear skies and favorable high-pass conditionsHighly Recommended
Winter (November–February)Very cold with possible heavy snow on the high passesNot Recommended

An early start takes us to Nepalgunj Airport for the spectacular mountain flight to Juphal, the principal air gateway to Dolpo. As the aircraft approaches the Himalayan foothills, the flat Terai landscape gives way to increasingly rugged mountains and deep valleys.

After landing at Juphal (2,475 m), meet the rest of our trekking and camping crew and organize the equipment before beginning the first walk of the journey. The trail descends through cultivated hillsides and small settlements toward the Thuli Bheri River before continuing to Dunai (2,140 m), the administrative centre of Dolpa District.

Tonight marks the beginning of our fully supported camping trek, with the Himalayan Dream Team crew setting up camp and preparing meals.

After breakfast at camp, we leave Dunai and follow the Thuli Bheri River upstream through the rugged landscapes of Lower Dolpo. The trail passes terraced fields, small settlements and sections of narrow river valley, with several suspension bridges along the way.

As we continue toward Tarakot, the valley gradually becomes more remote. Tarakot (2,537 m) is a traditional settlement situated above the river and was once an important trading and administrative centre in the Dolpo region.

On arrival, our camping crew prepares the campsite while you can rest and enjoy the surrounding valley scenery.

Leaving Tarakot after breakfast, we continue deeper into Lower Dolpo, following the river valley toward the Tarap Khola. The trail passes small settlements, cultivated fields and suspension bridges before entering increasingly rugged mountain terrain.

As we gain altitude, the valley narrows and the surroundings become noticeably wilder. We follow the Tarap Khola and make a steady ascent toward Laini Odar (3,160 m), with views of the steep valley walls and remote landscapes that characterize this part of Dolpo.

After reaching Laini Odar, we settle into our campsite for the night and enjoy a freshly prepared meal from our camping crew.

Today we continue along the Tarap Khola as the trail enters a narrower and more dramatic section of the valley. The route involves a series of ascents and descents along rocky mountain trails, with river crossings and sections carved into the steep-sided gorge.

As we move higher, the landscape gradually changes and vegetation becomes thinner. After passing the Chyugur Khola area, we continue toward Nawarpani (3,545 m), where we stop for the night before the longer climb toward Dho Tarap.

Our camping crew sets up camp while you rest and prepare for the higher-altitude section of the Lower Dolpo Trek ahead.

After breakfast, we continue higher through the Tarap Valley, following the Tarap Chu toward the remote settlement of Dho Tarap. The trail passes through a narrow gorge before gradually opening into the broad, dry landscape of the upper valley, where juniper shrubs and high-altitude grasslands replace the greener scenery of the lower route.

As we approach Dho Tarap (4,040 m), traditional stone houses, chortens, mani walls and cultivated fields begin to appear. Dho Tarap is one of the most fascinating settlements in Lower Dolpo, where Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions remain an important part of everyday life.

After a long trekking day, we settle into our campsite and rest at this important acclimatization point before heading toward the high passes.

Today is an important acclimatization day in Dho Tarap, allowing our bodies additional time to adjust to the altitude before approaching Numa La and Baga La. Rather than remaining inactive, we take a gentle walk around the valley following the principle of gaining some elevation during the day and returning to sleep lower at camp.

The day also provides time to explore Dho Tarap and experience the distinctive culture of Dolpo. Depending on conditions and available time, we can visit nearby monasteries, traditional villages and surrounding viewpoints while learning more about the Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions of the region.

We return to our campsite in Dho Tarap for another night, giving us valuable recovery and acclimatization time before continuing higher tomorrow.

Leaving Dho Tarap, we follow the upper Tarap Valley through a striking high-altitude landscape of open grasslands, traditional settlements and barren mountain slopes. The trail passes through the Tokyu area, where ancient monasteries, chortens and traditional stone houses reflect the strong Tibetan cultural influence of Dolpo.

We gradually leave the main valley and climb toward Numa La Base Camp (4,440 m). The surroundings become increasingly wild and exposed as we approach the high mountains, with vegetation becoming sparse and the air noticeably thinner.

We reach our campsite below Numa La and spend the afternoon resting, hydrating and preparing for tomorrow's demanding crossing of the highest pass on the Lower Dolpo Trek.

Today is one of the most challenging days of the Lower Dolpo Trek. We start early and climb steadily from Numa La Base Camp toward Numa La Pass (5,309 m), the highest point of our entire journey. The ascent becomes increasingly demanding as we move through exposed high-altitude terrain, where the thin air requires a slow and steady pace.

From the top of Numa La, weather permitting, we enjoy sweeping views across the remote mountains and valleys of Dolpo. After a short break at the pass, we begin a long descent through barren slopes and rugged terrain toward Danigar / Pelung Tang (approx. 4,510 m).

On arrival, we settle into our campsite and rest after the demanding pass crossing while our crew prepares a warm evening meal.

Another spectacular high-pass day begins with an early departure from camp. We climb steadily toward Baga La Pass (5,169 m), the second major pass of the Lower Dolpo circuit. The trail crosses an exposed high-altitude landscape, and the final ascent can be demanding because of the elevation and mountain conditions.

From Baga La, we can look across the rugged Dolpo landscape toward distant snow-covered peaks and deep valleys. We then descend from the pass, gradually leaving the stark high-mountain terrain behind as we make our way toward Yak Kharka / Dajok Tang.

After two consecutive high-pass crossings, tonight's campsite provides a welcome opportunity to rest and recover before continuing toward the greener landscapes surrounding Phoksundo.

After breakfast, we leave our high campsite and continue toward one of the great highlights of the Lower Dolpo Trek. The landscape gradually changes as the trail descends from the open alpine terrain into areas of juniper, pine and other mountain vegetation.

Continuing toward Ringmo, we reach the traditional village whose stone houses, fields and Buddhist and Bon cultural heritage form an important part of life around Phoksundo. From here, it is a short continuation to the shores of magnificent Shey Phoksundo Lake (3,611 m).

The lake's striking turquoise water, surrounded by steep cliffs and rugged mountains, creates one of the most memorable landscapes in the Nepal Himalaya. We establish our campsite near the lake and enjoy the remainder of the day in this remarkable setting.

Today is dedicated to exploring the extraordinary surroundings of Shey Phoksundo Lake and nearby Ringmo village. After the demanding Numa La and Baga La crossings, this more relaxed day also provides valuable time to recover and enjoy one of the natural highlights of Dolpo.

Depending on the trail and weather conditions, we can walk along accessible sections near the lake, visit Ringmo village and explore the area's cultural sites. The day offers time to appreciate the intense turquoise color of Phoksundo, the surrounding cliffs and the distinctive Tibetan-influenced culture of the local community.

We return to our campsite beside the lake for another peaceful evening in Shey Phoksundo National Park.

After breakfast beside Phoksundo Lake, we begin our descent toward Chhepka. The trail follows the drainage of the Phoksundo Khola and passes through a dramatic transition from the dry landscapes of upper Dolpo into greener forests and river valleys.

Along the way, we pass through sections of pine and birch forest, cross bridges and follow the river downstream through Shey Phoksundo National Park. The significant loss in elevation makes the surroundings increasingly greener as we descend.

By afternoon, we reach Chhepka (2,678 m), where our camping crew prepares our campsite for the night.

Today is the final walking day of our Lower Dolpo Trek. After breakfast, we continue downstream through forested valleys and small settlements, gradually leaving the protected landscapes of Shey Phoksundo National Park behind.

The trail eventually reconnects with the lower Dolpo valley and continues toward Juphal (2,475 m). Although we finish at a similar elevation to Chhepka, the route includes several smaller ascents and descents along the way before reaching the airstrip settlement.

On arrival in Juphal, we settle into our final campsite and celebrate the completion of our trekking journey with the guide, camping crew and support team. Tomorrow morning, weather permitting, we fly back to Nepalgunj and continue to Kathmandu.

After an early breakfast, we transfer to Juphal Airport for the morning flight to Nepalgunj (25-35 minutes). Flights from Juphal are highly weather-dependent, so an early departure generally provides the best opportunity for suitable flying conditions.

After landing in Nepalgunj, we connect with our onward flight to Kathmandu. The journey provides a striking contrast as we travel from the remote mountains of Dolpo across Nepal's lowlands and back to the Kathmandu Valley.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, a Himalayan Dream Team representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest after the trek.

Today is kept as an important contingency day in Kathmandu because flights between Juphal and Nepalgunj can occasionally be delayed or cancelled due to weather conditions in Dolpo.

Frequently Asked Questions for Lower Dolpo Trek - 18 Days

Yes. Lower Dolpo is one of Nepal's restricted trekking areas, and foreign trekkers require a Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit. The route also enters Shey Phoksundo National Park, so the applicable national park entry permit is required. Himalayan Dream Team arranges the necessary trekking permits and paperwork for the itinerary.

The restricted-area portion cannot be handled as an ordinary independent trek. Restricted-area trekking permits are issued through authorized trekking agencies, so Himalayan Dream Team organizes the required permits and trekking arrangements for our guests

Restricted-area rules and permit procedures can affect minimum group arrangements. Himalayan Dream Team will confirm the current requirements when you book and arrange the trek accordingly. Solo travellers are welcome to contact us, and we can advise on suitable departure options.

Reliable teahouse accommodation is not available throughout our complete Lower Dolpo route. We therefore operate Day 3 to Day 15 as a fully supported camping trek, giving us greater flexibility and a consistent standard of accommodation, meals and logistical support in remote areas.

The highest point on our itinerary is Numa La Pass at 5,309 m. The second major crossing is Baga La Pass at 5,169 m. Neither requires technical climbing, but both involve demanding high-altitude trekking.

The route gains altitude progressively through Tarakot, Laini Odar, Nawarpani and Dho Tarap. We spend two nights at Dho Tarap (4,040 m), including a dedicated acclimatization and exploration day, before continuing toward Numa La Base Camp and the high passes.

Flights between Nepalgunj and Juphal depend heavily on mountain weather and visibility. Delays and cancellations are possible. Our itinerary therefore includes a contingency day on Day 17 to provide additional flexibility. Any resulting extra costs are handled according to the booking conditions and services included in your package.

Small aircraft operating remote mountain routes have stricter baggage limits than larger domestic flights. Allowances can vary by airline and operating conditions, so Himalayan Dream Team will advise you of the applicable baggage allowance before departure. Excess baggage, when accepted, may incur an additional charge.

Previous multi-day or high-altitude trekking experience is strongly recommended, particularly because the route includes consecutive crossings above 5,000 m. More important than speed is good fitness, endurance and the ability to walk for several hours over remote mountain terrain.

Yes. You should have comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation at the elevations reached on this itinerary. Medical treatment, rescue and evacuation costs are not included in the trek package.

Your guide will assess the situation and take the appropriate action, which may include stopping the ascent, descending to a lower elevation or arranging evacuation when necessary. Because Dolpo is extremely remote, evacuation can depend on weather, location and helicopter availability.

Facilities are very limited and become increasingly unreliable as we travel deeper into Dolpo. Electricity, charging, mobile reception and internet access should not be expected throughout the camping section. We recommend carrying a power bank and keeping electronic use to a minimum.

Our trekking team will advise you on safe drinking-water arrangements throughout the journey. Because facilities vary considerably along this remote route, trekkers should carry a reusable water bottle and follow the guide's instructions regarding treated or boiled water.

You will need good trekking boots, layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, a warm down jacket, gloves, hat, sunglasses, trekking poles, headlamp and other personal trekking equipment suitable for temperatures above 5,000 m. Himalayan Dream Team provides the sleeping bag for the camping trek, and a detailed packing list will be provided before departure.

Yes. In a remote high-altitude region such as Dolpo, flexibility is essential. Weather, snow conditions, trail conditions, domestic flights, campsite suitability or the health of a trekker may require changes. Your guide may adjust walking times, campsites or parts of the itinerary when necessary for the safety and smooth operation of the trek.

The cost of the Lower Dolpo Trek depends on group size, travel dates, hotel category and specific trip arrangements. As this is a fully supported camping trek in a remote restricted region, the package includes extensive logistics, camping equipment, crew, permits and domestic flights.
