Mera Peak climbing with the Himalayan Dream Team takes you to the highest trekking peak of Nepal at 6,461 meters for an unforgettable high-altitude adventure. The starting point of this journey is a scenic 2,800-meter flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by a multi-day trek through the remote and untouched Hinku Valley. Our itinerary is planned for slow acclimatization by taking a longer route through tranquil forests, isolated trails, and picturesque Sherpa villages to enhance the experience of the local culture and natural beauty of Makalu Barun National Park, which happens to be the home of unique wildlife.
While going upwards on the trek, one will reach from rich forests all the way to alpine landscapes with glacial terrain, offering magnificent views of towering peaks: Everest 8,848 meters, Lhotse 8,516 meters, Makalu 8,485 meters, and Cho Oyu 8,188 meters. Although the route is not challenging technically, it definitely requires physical fitness, and at places some basic mountaineering skills, once you tread glacier paths and go upward at relatively regular inclines in high altitudes. Acclimatization day in Khare, at 5,000 meters, provides an opportunity to rest and prepare for the final ascent. Our expert Sherpa guides take you through crucial training in mountaineering techniques that ensure a safe and pleasurable climb.
You will start well before dawn on summit day and arrive at the top of Mera in time to watch the sunrise for a spectacular all-around panoramic view of these iconic mountains. The descent follows a scenic path back to Lukla, crossing the stunning Zatrawala Pass at 4600 meters. It is considered that spring and autumn seasons offer the best conditions for high-altitude trekking. Mera Peak Climbing is an exciting and gratifying journey, mingling adventure into Nepal's most isolated landscapes, testing high-altitude trekking, and triumphing at the top of one of the finest viewpoints in the Himalayas.
Upon arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport, a representative from Himalayan Dream Team will greet you and guide you to your hotel. Once you reach the hotel, you can check in, freshen up, and take some time to relax. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Dream Team. We will spend the night in Kathmandu.
Start your day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel before starting a day trip around Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): Our first visit will be to the ancient Swayambhunath Stupa situated on top of a hill, depicting breathtaking panoramic views of Kathmandu. The stupa is a sacrosanct and beautiful symbol of belief to the Buddhists and Hindus alike.
Pashupatinath Temple: Next, we will go to visit Pashupatinath, Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple and the primary place of cremation. You can observe and shoot in photos traditional Hindu rituals along the Bagmati River-you immerse yourself into local spiritual life.
Kathmandu Durbar Square: Right after having a delicious lunch, we go to Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is the magnificent Newari architectural specie. Have the photo session with the locals in their traditional dress or Hindu holy men called Sadhus. It will be great to capture some unique and memorable portraits.
Vegetable and Spice Markets: End the day with a visit to the vegetable and spice markets that are always bustling, day through. Take dynamic street photos of colorful scenes with an energetic atmosphere and varied faces that can give a glimpse into the life of Kathmandu.
Begin your adventure by flying from Kathmandu to Lukla (2860m), taking in the spectacular Himalayan landscape below, filled with lush valleys, rivers, and glimpses of snow-capped peaks. The short 45-minute flight lands you at Lukla, where you’ll meet your expedition crew, finalizing supplies and gear if needed. After exploring the charming Lukla village and stocking up on essentials, set off on your first trek. You’ll venture through dense rhododendron and pine forests and alongside the Dudh Koshi River, a calm yet energetic companion on your way to Chhuthang. This serene spot, used by herders in the summer, offers a peaceful overnight stay in a cozy lodge.
Today’s trek is challenging yet rewarding as you make your way over Zatrawal Pass. Begin with a steady ascent through trails adorned with wild magnolias, rhododendrons, and towering pine trees. As the climb becomes steeper, take breaks to hydrate and enjoy panoramic views that unfold with every step. The pass opens up to views of remote peaks like Lumdung Himal, Kongdi Ri, and the rugged Numbur Himal. After reaching the top of Zatrawal Pass, enjoy a gentle descent to Tuli Kharka (4300m). This pastureland has several teahouses where you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and a restful night surrounded by breathtaking Himalayan vistas.
Leaving Tuli Kharka, descend into the picturesque Hinku Valley. The trail meanders alongside the Hinku River, guiding you through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. Rocky segments with a mix of ups and downs keep the day interesting, and occasional openings in the trees offer stunning glimpses of Mera Peak in the distance. As you approach Kothe, a small village by the river, you’ll notice the valley’s scenery shifting into even more dramatic, raw landscapes. Here, you’ll rest in a teahouse, immersed in the tranquil beauty of the river and mountain surroundings.
Today’s journey takes you to Thangnak, an idyllic village framed by striking views of Mera Peak. Following the Hinku Khola Ridge, ascend through trails that lead to the small settlement of Gondishung, primarily inhabited by herders in the summer. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Lungsumgba Monastery, a spiritual site nearly 200 years old, where trekkers traditionally pause to offer blessings for a successful climb. Shortly after, you’ll arrive at Thangnak, a serene grazing area with comfortable lodges where you can admire views of Mera Peak and Kusum Kanguru before resting for the night.
The trek to Khare takes you further up the Hinku Valley, and as you reach higher altitudes, remember to hydrate and pace yourself. The trail includes scenic climbs over the rocky moraines of the Dig Glacier and the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. With each step, the views become more impressive, with Khare finally welcoming you with unobstructed vistas of Kusum Kanguru, Kyashar, and Mera Peak’s north face. Khare is the last major settlement before the base camp, and it offers warm lodges where you’ll settle in for a night amid the towering peaks.
Acclimatizing is essential at this point in the journey to prevent altitude sickness. Take a rest day to allow your body to adjust to the higher altitude while exploring the scenic surroundings of Khare. Light hikes around the area can help with acclimatization, as well as a final check of your mountaineering gear. Take in the mountain ambiance, and prepare for the ascent to Mera Peak High Camp tomorrow.
Start early from Khare as it is a day full of ascents. Firstly, the trek goes to Mera La Pass, the beginning of the snowy route. The trail then goes on the snowy and icy path to Mera Base Camp, before starting the ascent on the gradual climb to Mera High Camp. Here, the camp will be set up, and right at the heart of the Himalayas, you will have a warm meal with close-up views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and Nuptse. Have a good night's rest, since early morning will be the time to begin the summit push.
This is a contingency day for poor weather or other unexpected delays in attempts for the summit. The guides will be keeping a close eye on weather patterns to prepare for the best summit opportunity. If the weather is good, you can proceed with the summit attempt; otherwise, use this day for further acclimatization.
Summit day starts well before dawn. With expert guides leading the way, you will cross steep sections and icy slopes, using crampons and ropes where required. After about five to six hours of climbing, you will reach Mera Peak's summit; you are sure to get some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Himalayas, which include Everest, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. After celebrating your summit, begin the cautious descent back to Khare for a well-deserved rest in a cozy teahouse.
Retracing your steps, descend along the familiar moraines of the Hinku Valley and past Thangnak to reach Kothe. This return trek offers a chance to reflect on the summit success while enjoying the lush scenery at lower altitudes. The trek back feels lighter, with a rewarding sense of accomplishment.
After breakfast, follow the scenic trail back to Tuli Kharka, passing through forests of pine and rhododendron. The route includes some uphill sections, but the terrain is gentler as you make your way along the Hinku River. Tuli Kharka, a popular grazing area for yaks, offers a quiet place to rest after a day of hiking.
Today, cross Zatrawala Pass once more, enjoying panoramic Himalayan views from the top before beginning the descent to Lukla. The mix of uphill and downhill segments will keep you engaged, and arriving in Lukla brings the adventure full circle. Here, enjoy a well-deserved rest in a comfortable teahouse, celebrating your achievements.
Towards the end of your Himalayan Expedition, take a spectacular flight back from Lukla to Kathmandu. A vista like this provides the last glimpse into breathtaking Himalayas, wrapping up the journey with memories of towering peaks, tough passes, and incomparable camaraderie. You'll be taken to a hotel in Kathmandu upon arrival, from where you can either spend your time visiting Kathmandu or just relax in your room, thinking about the unforgettable moments spent in the Himalaya
Since you were not able to cover all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites during your sightseeing exploration on Day 2 of your Mera Peak Climbing expedition, you will use today to cover up those places that you missed and catch a glimpse of some other renowned landmarks. Of course, you also want to buy some souvenirs as memories of this magnificent adventure, so check out some of the most popular marketplaces like Thamel, Asan, and Mangalabazar or popular cultural sites to find just the right piece.
This evening, the Himalayan Dream Team will organize a farewell dinner party to celebrate your successful climb and to honor our joint venture.
Depending on your departure time, we will transfer you in time to the airport. Check out time at hotels is 12 PM, but you always can leave your luggage there for later departures and still enjoy Kathmandu.
At 6,476 meters above sea level, Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in the Himalayas. Close by to Mount Everest in the Khumbu region, Mera Peak is an ideal climb for a beginner mountaineer wanting to begin their journey to the Himalayas. Stunning panoramic views of some of the world's highest peaks, including Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, are a sight to behold from here. From the top, breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-laden Himalayas greet the climber.
Mainly, the mountain is triple-peaked: Mera North-6,476 meters or 21,246 feet above sea level, Mera Central-6,461 meters or 21,197 feet above sea level, and Mera South-6,065 meters or 19,898 feet above sea level. Of these three summits, the most popular is the Mera North; over the years, it has served as a starting point for mountaineers who seek experience and acclimatization for even higher, further remote mountains. For most novice climbers, this peak is their stepping stone to future, even more demanding climbs.
While Mera Peak is considered to be neither the toughest of climbs, neither would it be called a complete cakewalk. It is rated as a moderately difficult climb; there are high-altitude ascents and some semi-technical routes in the climb. The majority of the climb is straightforward, non-technical, but there are areas that will need basic mountaineering skills, hence ideal for beginners. With proper training and preparation, novice climbers can confidently take on Mera Peak and gain important experience.
The weather conditions play a vital role in scaling Mera Peak successfully because this is a cool place at high altitude. There are four distinct seasons in the region, and they include spring, summer or monsoon, autumn, and winter. Each has its different trekking experiences. However, to have the best possible experience, spring and autumn are preferred.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the best seasons to climb Mera Peak as it offers moderate weather and fascinating scenery due to blooming flowers including rhododendrons. Early March can be pretty cold whereas late May receives intermittent rainfall.
Temperature: -15°C to 10°C
Summer/Monsoon (June to August)
The summer in Nepal coincides with the monsoon period; wet, slippery trails besides less favorable cloud cover obscuring the mountain views; hence, this season is less recommended for Mera Peak climbing. However, late August is considered a better time since the rains ease.
Temperature: 3°C to 16°C
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is held as the best time to climb Mera Peak. The temperatures are pleasant with small rainfall, landscapes are green and the mountain views are clear and striking. Early September might witness some residual rainfall while late November may face snow. Conditions are good during this period of time.
Temperature: -11°C to 12°C
Winter (December to February)
Winter on Mera Peak is extremely cold, and icy and snowy trails add the extra degree of difficulties. Actually, winter ascents are not recommended because of safety considerations, though early December and late February may also be considered decent for experienced climbers.
Temperature: -20°C to -4°C
Summary: The spring and autumn seasons offer the best conditions for climbing Mera Peak because comfortable temperatures balance with breathtaking scenery.
