FAQs

Do I Need a Tibet Travel Permit

Yes. All foreign travelers visiting Tibet must obtain a Tibet Travel Permit issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. Depending on your itinerary, additional local permits may also be required. Himalayan Dream Team will arrange all the necessary Tibet travel permits for you, so you only need to provide the required passport and visa documents in advance. Please note that independent travel is not permitted in Tibet, and all visitors must travel with an authorized tour operator and licensed Tibetan guide.

The Ganden to Samye Trek is considered a moderate to challenging high-altitude trek. Although the trails are generally well-defined and do not require any technical climbing, you will cross high mountain passes reaching 5,250 meters and hike for approximately 4 to 6 hours per day. A good level of physical fitness and preparation is recommended to fully enjoy the trek.

The best time to trek from Ganden to Samye is during spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer stable weather, mild daytime temperatures, minimal rainfall, and excellent visibility, making them ideal for both trekking and sightseeing in Tibet.

Spring transforms the valleys with colorful alpine flowers and fresh mountain scenery, while autumn is renowned for its crystal-clear skies, comfortable trekking conditions, and spectacular panoramic views of the Tibetan Plateau and distant Himalayan peaks. These months also provide the best opportunities for photography and enjoying Tibet's breathtaking landscapes.

Yes. This itinerary can be fully customized according to your travel dates, interests, fitness level, and available time. Additional sightseeing in Kathmandu, extra days in Lhasa, longer trekking routes, or extensions to destinations such as Everest Base Camp, Mount Kailash, or Nepal can also be arranged.

Yes. Hotels in Kathmandu and Lhasa provide reliable electricity and charging facilities. During the Ganden to Samye Trek, electricity is available in some local guesthouses, but charging facilities may be limited or available for an additional fee. To ensure your phone, camera, and other electronic devices remain powered throughout the trek, we recommend bringing a fully charged power bank and any necessary charging cables or adapters.

Hotels in Kathmandu and Lhasa generally offer Wi-Fi, although internet speeds may vary. During the trek, Wi-Fi is limited and may only be available in some guesthouses, often for an additional charge. Mobile network coverage is also intermittent in remote mountain areas, making the trek an excellent opportunity to disconnect and fully enjoy Tibet's spectacular natural beauty.

Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential. If you are in good physical condition, regularly exercise, and enjoy hiking, you can successfully complete this trek. Since the route reaches high altitudes, preparing with regular walking, hiking, or cardiovascular exercise before your trip is highly recommended.

Because this trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, there is always a possibility of experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness. Our itinerary is carefully designed with several acclimatization days in Lhasa before the trek begins, significantly reducing the risk. Staying well hydrated, walking at a comfortable pace, and following your guide's advice are the best ways to acclimatize safely.

You will stay in comfortable 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Lhasa. A variety of freshly prepared meals are provided throughout your journey. During the cultural tour and trek, you can enjoy a combination of Tibetan, Chinese, and simple international cuisine, including noodles, rice dishes, soups, vegetables, eggs, potatoes, and seasonal fruits where available. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included throughout the Tibet portion of the tour as specified in the itinerary.

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for the Tibet Ganden to Samye Trek due to the high altitude and remote mountain environment. Your insurance policy should cover high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,250 meters, emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, and loss or delay of baggage.

Although the trek is carefully planned with proper acclimatization and experienced local guides, weather conditions and unexpected situations can occur in the Himalayas. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before your arrival to ensure you are fully protected throughout your journey.
