About the Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang

The Tiji Festival in Upper Mustang is one of the most important Buddhist festivals in Nepal and a major cultural highlight of the hidden kingdom of Lo Manthang. Locally known as “Tenchi,” which means “prayer for world peace and the welfare of all humanity,” the festival represents the victory of good over evil through ancient Tibetan Buddhist rituals, sacred mask dances, and traditional prayers.

According to historical records, the Tiji Festival began in the 14th century after King Samdup Rabten of Lo Manthang invited the respected Buddhist scholar and Shakya Trizin, Ngawang Kunga Sonam, to Mustang to remove negative energies and protect the region from evil forces. During this spiritual purification, monks stayed at the historic Chhode Monastery for three days performing the powerful Vajrakila rituals introduced by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great tantric master of the 8th century.

Today, the monks of Chhode Monastery continue this centuries-old tradition every year in Lo Manthang. The three-day Tiji Festival features colorful mask dances, Buddhist chanting, traditional music, and symbolic performances that tell the story of the battle between good and evil. The festival is deeply connected to the spiritual beliefs and cultural identity of the people of Mustang.

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival usually takes place in May according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, attracting travelers from around the world who want to experience authentic Tibetan culture in Nepal. Before the festival begins, monks prepare special ritual items and colorful Torma (sacred butter and flour sculptures) used during the ceremonies.

For the local communities of Mustang, especially the seven ancient villages of the region, Tiji is more than a festival — it is a sacred prayer for peace, protection, prosperity, and harmony. Without Tiji, many locals feel they would lose an important part of their culture, religion, and identity.

At Himalayan Dream Team, we offer carefully designed Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Tours and Jeep Tours, allowing travelers to experience this rare Himalayan festival with expert local guidance, cultural insight, and comfortable travel arrangements.
