Is the Women Only Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficult?

The Women Only Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderate to challenging Himalayan trek, suitable for women with a good level of fitness and a spirit of adventure. Daily walking distances typically range from 4 to 8 hours, taking you through remote mountain villages, forests, river valleys, and high-altitude landscapes.

The trek reaches its highest point at the spectacular Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), one of Nepal's most scenic mountain passes. While no technical climbing or mountaineering experience is required, the high altitude, long trekking days, and mountain terrain make proper preparation and acclimatization important.

With a carefully designed itinerary, experienced female trekking guides, acclimatization days, and full support from the Himalayan Dream Team, the trek is achievable for most healthy and active women. In return, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking Himalayan scenery, authentic Tibetan-influenced culture, ancient monasteries, remote mountain villages, and an unforgettable adventure in one of Nepal's most spectacular trekking regions.

Best Time for the Women Only Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Women Only Manaslu Circuit Trek can be enjoyed throughout much of the year, but spring and autumn offer the best weather, mountain views, and trekking conditions.

Autumn (September-November): Clear skies, stable weather, excellent visibility, and ideal conditions for crossing Larkya La Pass. This is the most popular trekking season in the Manaslu region.

Spring (March-May): Blooming rhododendron forests, colorful landscapes, active wildlife, and pleasant temperatures make spring one of the most beautiful times to trek.

Winter (December-February): Quiet trails and spectacular snowy scenery. Temperatures can be very cold at higher elevations, and snow may affect Larkya La Pass. Recommended for experienced trekkers.

Monsoon (June-August): Lush green hills and fewer trekkers, but heavy rainfall, muddy trails, leeches, and possible landslides make this the least recommended season.

For the best overall experience, we highly recommend trekking during April, May, October and November, when weather conditions are generally at their best and the Himalayan views are truly spectacular.

Manaslu Circuit Trek: Required Permits

The Manaslu Circuit Trek passes through a restricted region of Nepal and requires several government-issued trekking permits. All permits are arranged by Himalayan Dream Team before the trek begins.

The following permits are required:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Important Information:

  1. Solo trekking is not permitted in the Manaslu region.
  2. A minimum of two trekkers is required to obtain the Restricted Area Permit.
  3. All trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide through a registered trekking agency.
  4. Your passport copy and passport-sized photos may be required for permit processing.

With all permits arranged in advance by our team, you can focus on enjoying the spectacular scenery, rich culture, and unforgettable adventure of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Teahouse Accommodation: What to Expect

During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, accommodation is in simple yet welcoming teahouses- small, family-run lodges that provide trekkers with a warm bed, hearty meals, and a genuine insight into Himalayan mountain life. Facilities are basic, but the atmosphere is cozy, authentic, and well-suited for a remote trekking experience.

Rooms

Teahouse rooms are typically twin-shared, featuring wooden walls, simple furnishings, thin mattresses, and warm blankets. Insulation is minimal, so a good four-season sleeping bag is highly recommended, especially above 3,000 meters. Rooms are clean and practical, designed mainly for resting after long trekking days.

Toilets and Showers

Most teahouses have shared toilets, commonly squat-style, while some lodges at lower altitudes may offer Western toilets. Hot showers are available at many stops for an additional fee and are usually heated by gas or solar power. At higher elevations, water may be limited or cold due to freezing temperatures.

Heating

Bedrooms are generally unheated. In the evenings, trekkers gather in the dining area, which serves as the warm and social heart of the teahouse. A central stove- often fueled by wood or yak dung - provides heat while guests enjoy meals, warm drinks and shared conversations, creating a comfortable and communal atmosphere.

Power and Wi-Fi

Electricity is available in most villages, though the supply can be unreliable. Charging electronic devices usually involves a small fee, especially at higher altitudes. Wi-Fi is offered in some teahouses for an extra cost, but connections are often slow or unstable - an ideal opportunity to disconnect and fully enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings.

Food During the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Food on the Manaslu Circuit Trek is freshly prepared in local teahouses and provides the energy needed for long days of trekking in the Himalayas. While menus become simpler at higher elevations, trekkers can still enjoy a good variety of nutritious and satisfying meals throughout the journey.

Common meals and drinks available during the trek:

  • Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables and pickles) – Nepal's most popular trekking meal.
  • Noodles, fried rice, pasta, and potato dishes.
  • Soups, porridge, pancakes, eggs, and Tibetan bread.
  • Momos (Nepali dumplings) in many villages.
  • Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and ginger lemon honey tea.
  • Vegetarian meals available throughout the trek.
  • Vegan meals can often be arranged with advance notice.
  • Fresh seasonal fruits may be served at some lodges.
  • Safe boiled drinking water available for purchase in most teahouses.

Our recommendation: For the best health and energy at high altitude, choose freshly cooked local meals, stay well hydrated and avoid meat dishes at higher elevations where refrigeration is limited.

Altitude Sickness and Safety

Altitude sickness is one of the most important considerations on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, as the trail reaches a maximum elevation of 5,106 meters at Larkya La Pass. Some trekkers may experience mild symptoms such as headaches, loss of appetite, dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty sleeping as they gain altitude.

To minimize the risk, our itinerary includes a carefully planned acclimatization day in Samagaun, allowing your body sufficient time to adjust before moving higher. Our experienced guides closely monitor all participants throughout the trek and provide advice on hydration, pacing, and altitude awareness.

The best prevention is to walk slowly, stay well hydrated, eat regularly, and listen to your body. If any symptoms develop, it is important to inform your guide immediately so appropriate action can be taken.

Your safety is our highest priority. All Himalayan Dream Team guides are trained in first aid and altitude management. In the unlikely event of a serious medical emergency, helicopter evacuation can be arranged through your travel insurance provider.

With proper acclimatization, experienced guides, and a sensible trekking pace, the vast majority of trekkers complete the Manaslu Circuit safely and successfully while enjoying one of Nepal's most spectacular Himalayan adventures.

Our day begins with breakfast, and we will be following the trail upstream along the river from Deng towards the tiny village of 4 houses. From here we walk through a newly built rock tunnel, avoiding the steep traditional climb. At Ghap, Tibetan culture begins to influence our trail, as there are many mani stones and chortens scattered around. Mani stones are stone plates, rocks and/or pebbles inscribed with the six syllabled mantra of Avalokiteshvara (Om mani padme hum, hence the name “Mani stone”) as a form of prayer in Tibetan buddhism

After reaching Namrung, we stop for tea and enjoy our first impressive views of the higher Himalayan peaks. As we continue climbing, the valley opens up with breathtaking panoramas of Himal Chuli, Ganesh Himal, and Mount Manaslu.

Passing through the beautiful villages of Lihi and Sho, we finally arrive at the charming village of Lho. This traditional Tibetan-style settlement is known for its stunning sunset and sunrise views over Mount Manaslu. Today is one of the most scenic and rewarding days of the trek. After breakfast in Lho, we begin our walk with beautiful morning views of Mount Manaslu shining above the valley.

The trail gradually leads us through forests and open landscapes toward the peaceful village of Shyala, where the views of Manaslu and surrounding peaks become even more impressive. This is one of the best viewpoints of the entire trek, with wide mountain panoramas and a calm Himalayan atmosphere.

From Shyala, we take a scenic side trip to Pungyen Gompa (4,000 m), an ancient monastery located below the Manaslu Glacier. Surrounded by dramatic alpine scenery, the gompa offers a quiet and spiritual setting, making it a special highlight of the day.

After enjoying some time at the monastery, we continue trekking toward Samagaun. As we approach the village, you will notice strong Tibetan influence in the culture, with traditional stone houses, mani walls, and colorful prayer flags.

For those looking for a more active day, there is an optional hike to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m). It is a challenging but unforgettable experience for strong trekkers.

For a more relaxed option, you can take a gentle walk to Birendra Lake, a stunning glacial lake located just below the village. Often partially frozen, the lake’s turquoise color and peaceful setting make it a perfect place to enjoy the scenery and rest.

You may also spend time exploring Samagaun village, observing local life, visiting monasteries, or simply relaxing and preparing for the higher elevations ahead.

After your chosen activity, we return to the lodge in Samagaun.

Today after breakfast, we start with an easy 3-hour trek. We pass the long mani walls at Kermo Kharka, from where we spot the entrance chorten of Samdo high up on a bluff. From the viewpoint we descend back to the Budhi Gandaki and cross a small bridge followed by a short climb to the ‘kane’ entrance of Samdo. Look back down the valley for great views. The villagers of Samdo crossed over the border from the village of Riu after 1959 and built their new village here at their old herding settlement. Samdo village is a collection of houses and lodges at 3850 meters, and most trekkers from the heat of a week ago while we are huddled around the stove and a wind from Tibet is battering the windowpanes. Get out and take a walk around the village, where the inhabitants live an essentially Tibetan yak, sheep and goat herding, horse training and barley planting lifestyle.

This day we will be following the old trade route to Tibet and we will continue to hike through the remnants of Larkya bazaar; one of the markets that flourished in trade. After two hours of climbing through glaciers, which is accompanied by stunning views, we reach the campsite at Dharamsala where we feast on lunch and admire the views. The altitude and cold will definitely be felt here; hence we recommend a more relaxed afternoon, ensuring warmth.

The most memorable highlights of the trip are perhaps unto today, when we go to the highest point of the trek. After a moderate climb from the campsite, we arrive at the ablation valley on the North side of the Larkya Glaciers where we first see Cho Danda and Larkya Peak. We traverse the moraines of the glacier where we do a gentle climb which only becomes steeper toward the end of the pass. The panoramic views from the pass are magnificent. Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kangguru and the gigantic Annapurna II range are all in the line of vision. The region is a habitat for Bharal (Blue Sheep) and Snow Cock, and with new snow on the ground there might be Snow Leopard tracks from the night before. And I mean the views literally, the height of the Larke La Pass is 5,106 m and they are simply mind-blowing.

As we hang the Tibetan prayer flags and chant ‘Ki ki so so lha gyalo’ (may the Gods be victorious), we prepare for a trail with a steep slope followed by a glacial Moraine. There’s an ‘ankle bothering’ drop that is slippery if snow covered, so ensure you have your ‘Yak Tracks’ ready. Trekking poles are a must. The descent is boulder-strewn so make appreciate the views around you as they lead to Bimtang. This brings us to our overnight stop at Bimtang. Every now and then you can catch a glimpse of Manaslu in the distance succumbing to the evening mist. It's a sight that I couldn't get enough of.

We will start our day rough in a ridge in Bhimtang which gives us stunning views of Mt. Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Himlung Himal and Cheo Himal. After a break, we move down through high pastures (Sangure Kharka) and cross a bridge over the Dudh Khola. The ‘Rhododendron’ forest is one of the featured spots on the trekking trail along with a narrow valley which guides us to Karche at 2,785 meters, the highest cultivated land in the valley.

We make our way passes to fields and make a steep climb over a ridge which descends in a sweeping arc to the river bank at the altitude of 2,580. As we approach Dharapani, we spot a police check point, a town developed in the Annapurna Circuit. We are now able to view the snowcapped mountains and can stay overnight here.

Frequently Asked Questions for Women Only Trek to Manaslu Circuit

Permits & Logistics

Yes, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is an excellent choice for solo travelers. However, because the Manaslu region is a restricted area, Nepal government regulations require a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide to obtain the necessary permits. Solo travelers can easily join one of our fixed departure groups or be paired with other trekkers. This allows you to enjoy the safety, companionship, and support of a small group while experiencing one of Nepal's most spectacular trekking routes.

Yes, drinking water is available throughout the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Most teahouses sell boiled drinking water, and bottled water is available in many villages. To reduce plastic waste and support responsible tourism, we recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and using water purification tablets, filters, or purification systems. Your guide will assist you in finding safe drinking water throughout the trek.

Yes. A licensed trekking guide is mandatory for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The Manaslu region is a restricted area, and Nepal government regulations require all trekkers to be accompanied by a registered guide and travel through a licensed trekking agency. An experienced guide not only handles permits and logistics but also enhances your safety, provides cultural insights, and assists throughout the journey.

Your safety is our highest priority. All Himalayan Dream Team guides are trained in altitude awareness, first aid, and emergency procedures. In case of illness, injury, or altitude-related complications, your guide will assess the situation and coordinate the most appropriate response. If necessary, emergency helicopter evacuation can be arranged through your travel insurance provider. Our office team in Kathmandu remains available 24/7 to assist with emergency support and communication throughout your trek.

Accommodation & Meals

Yes, the Manaslu Circuit Trek can be customized according to your interests, fitness level, available time, and travel preferences. Additional acclimatization days, side trips to Manaslu Base Camp, Tsum Valley extensions, helicopter returns, upgraded accommodation in Kathmandu, or private departures can all be arranged. Himalayan Dream Team can design a personalized itinerary to suit your specific needs.

General Information

Yes. The Manaslu Circuit Trek passes through beautiful forests filled with rhododendron, pine, fir, and oak trees, particularly between Jagat, Namrung, and Bhimtang. During spring (March to May), the rhododendron forests burst into bloom, covering the hillsides with vibrant red, pink, and white flowers, creating some of the most colorful scenery in the Himalayas.

The Manaslu Conservation Area is home to a wide variety of wildlife and bird species. Trekkers may encounter Himalayan thar, blue sheep, musk deer, langur monkeys, Himalayan marmots, and numerous species of pheasants and birds. The region is also home to rare species such as the snow leopard and Himalayan black bear, although sightings are extremely uncommon due to their elusive nature.

Yes. The Manaslu region is one of Nepal's most culturally rich trekking destinations. The upper valleys are heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and feature ancient monasteries, mani walls, prayer wheels, chortens, and colorful prayer flags. Villages such as Lho, Samagaun, and Samdo offer a fascinating insight into traditional Himalayan lifestyles that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers spectacular views of some of Nepal's most beautiful Himalayan peaks. Throughout the trek, you can enjoy views of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), Himal Chuli, Ngadi Chuli, Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, Himlung Himal, Larkya Peak, and Annapurna II. The panoramic views from Larkya La Pass are considered among the finest mountain vistas in Nepal.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek reaches elevations above 5,000 meters, so proper gear is essential. We recommend bringing comfortable trekking boots, warm layered clothing, a down jacket, waterproof rain gear, a sleeping bag, trekking poles, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a personal first-aid kit.

Most trekking equipment, including sleeping bags, down jackets, trekking poles, and duffel bags, can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu before the trek begins. A detailed packing list will be provided after booking.

Yes. Kathmandu is one of the best places in Nepal to rent or purchase trekking equipment before starting the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Essential gear such as sleeping bags, down jackets, trekking poles, duffel bags, crampons (when necessary), and other cold-weather equipment can be rented at reasonable prices from reputable outdoor shops in Thamel.

If you are missing any equipment, there is no need to worry. The Himalayan Dream Team can assist you in finding quality rental gear before the trek begins, ensuring you are fully prepared for your Himalayan adventure without the need to carry bulky equipment from home.

Payment & Cost

Yes, most teahouses along the Manaslu Circuit Trek offer charging facilities and Wi-Fi services for an additional fee. However, both electricity and internet connections become less reliable at higher elevations. Charging costs generally increase as you gain altitude. We recommend bringing a power bank to keep your electronic devices charged throughout the trek.

Culture

The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a more remote, peaceful, and authentic Himalayan experience. Compared to Everest Base Camp, the trails are less crowded, the culture is more traditional, and the scenery remains remarkably untouched. It is ideal for trekkers seeking wilderness, cultural immersion and spectacular mountain views away from the busy trekking routes.
