Poon Hill Trek Difficulty & Fitness

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is graded easy to moderate and is suitable for first-time trekkers as well as travellers with previous hiking experience. No technical climbing skills or previous high-altitude trekking experience are required.

During the trek, you should be comfortable walking approximately 4–6 hours a day on mountain trails with uphill and downhill sections. The main challenges are the stone staircases around Ulleri and the early-morning climb from Ghorepani to Poon Hill (3,210 m).

After breakfast, your guide will take you on a cultural sightseeing tour of Kathmandu, introducing you to some of the city's most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Visit Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), one of the Kathmandu Valley's oldest Buddhist sites, situated on a hill overlooking the city. Continue to Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal's most important Hindu temple complex, located beside the sacred Bagmati River.

The sightseeing program also includes Kathmandu Durbar Square, the historic royal heart of the old city, where temples, courtyards and traditional Newari architecture reflect Kathmandu's long cultural history.

After breakfast, we leave Pokhara and drive to Nayapul, where our trek into the Annapurna foothills begins.

We walk through Birethanti and continue along the valley through terraced farmland and small settlements toward Tikhedhunga. From here, the trail becomes steeper as we climb the well-known stone staircase toward Ulleri (2,050 m).

The climb requires a steady pace, but there is plenty of time to stop and enjoy the surrounding landscape. On reaching Ulleri, we check into our mountain lodge.

Spending Christmas Day trekking in the Annapurna region gives this journey a very different festive experience, surrounded by mountain scenery and traditional Himalayan villages.

After breakfast, we continue uphill from Ulleri toward Ghorepani. The trail passes through Banthanti and Nangethanti before entering beautiful forests of oak and rhododendron.

Winter brings cooler temperatures to this part of the Annapurna region, and snow or ice may occasionally be present at higher elevations. As we gain altitude, Himalayan peaks begin to appear through openings in the forest when the weather is clear.

We reach Ghorepani (2,874 m) and settle into our mountain lodge. The village offers impressive views toward the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in clear weather.

We have an early evening tonight, as tomorrow begins before sunrise for the hike to Poon Hill.

We start before sunrise for the uphill hike from Ghorepani to Poon Hill (3,210 m), the highest point of this journey.

On a clear morning, Poon Hill offers a magnificent panorama across the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, including Dhaulagiri I, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

After watching the morning light reach the Himalayan peaks, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast.

We then continue toward Tadapani (2,610 m), following a beautiful trail through rhododendron and oak forests, with several climbs and descents along the way.

On arrival in Tadapani, we check into our mountain lodge. Weather permitting, there are excellent views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre from the surrounding area.

After breakfast, we leave Tadapani and descend through rhododendron and oak forests toward Ghandruk. This is a shorter trekking day, allowing us to walk at a relaxed pace and enjoy the changing scenery.

We arrive at Ghandruk (1,940 m), one of the best-known traditional Gurung villages in the Annapurna region. On a clear day, the village offers beautiful views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

After checking into our mountain lodge, there is time to explore the old village, learn more about Gurung culture and traditions, or simply relax and enjoy the mountain surroundings.

After breakfast, we begin our final day of trekking, descending from Ghandruk through terraced farmland and traditional hillside settlements toward the Modi Khola Valley.

The trail continues toward Birethanti, where we complete the main trekking route. From here, we walk to Nayapul and meet our vehicle for the drive back to Pokhara (822 m).

After arriving in Pokhara, we check into the hotel. The remainder of the day is free to rest after the trek, visit the cafés and restaurants around Lakeside or enjoy an evening walk beside Phewa Lake.

Today is a free day in Pokhara, giving you time to relax after completing the Poon Hill Trek.

You can spend the day around Phewa Lake and Lakeside, enjoy the city's cafés and restaurants, shop for souvenirs or simply rest at the hotel.

Travellers who would like to explore further can visit places such as the World Peace Pagoda, Davis Falls, Gupteshwor Cave or International Mountain Museum. Boating on Phewa Lake can also be arranged, depending on weather and personal preference.

Begin the New Year in Chitwan National Park, one of Nepal's most important wildlife areas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Today's activities are arranged according to the resort and national park schedule and may include a canoe excursion, guided jungle walk, wildlife safari and birdwatching. Chitwan is home to wildlife including the greater one-horned rhinoceros, deer, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous bird species. Bengal tigers also inhabit the national park, although sightings are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

There will also be opportunities to learn more about the traditions and lifestyle of the local Tharu community.

On 25 December, you leave Pokhara and begin the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. After driving to the trekking starting point, you walk through the Annapurna foothills toward Ulleri, where you stay overnight in a mountain lodge.

You will spend New Year’s Eve on 31 December in Chitwan. After travelling from Pokhara, you check into your jungle resort and begin the Chitwan section of the journey. Any special New Year’s Eve celebration, gala dinner or entertainment program depends on the resort and will be confirmed for the specific departure.

A special Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve gala dinner is not automatically included unless it is specifically stated in your booking confirmation. Festive programs and compulsory hotel or resort supplements can vary from year to year.

Yes. The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek can be completed in December, and winter often brings clear mountain views and quieter trails. However, temperatures are colder, especially in Ghorepani and during the early-morning hike to Poon Hill, and snow or ice can occasionally affect the trail.

The trek is graded easy to moderate. You should be comfortable walking approximately 4–6 hours per day on mountain paths with uphill and downhill sections. The main challenges are the stone steps around Ulleri and the early-morning ascent to Poon Hill at 3,210 m. No technical climbing experience is required.

Winter temperatures in the Poon Hill region can be cold, particularly before sunrise. Around Ghorepani and Poon Hill, daytime temperatures may be approximately 5–12°C, while early mornings and nights can fall below freezing. These are typical ranges only, and actual conditions vary with weather and elevation.

Snow is possible but not guaranteed. December and early January are generally relatively dry months, but winter weather systems can occasionally bring snowfall to Ghorepani, Poon Hill and other higher sections of the trek. Ice can also form on shaded sections of the trail.

As this tour combines winter trekking in the Annapurna region with sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara and wildlife activities in Chitwan, you should pack for different temperatures and conditions. Essential items include warm layers, a down or insulated jacket, thermal clothing, gloves, a warm hat, comfortable trekking trousers, good trekking shoes or boots, and a small daypack. Trekking poles are also useful, particularly if there is snow or ice on the trail.

After your booking is confirmed, Himalayan Dream Team will provide you with a detailed pre-departure information package and complete packing list for the Christmas and New Year Tour, so you can prepare properly before traveling to Nepal.

You stay in comfortable hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, locally operated mountain lodges during the Poon Hill Trek and a jungle resort in Chitwan. Trekking lodges are generally simple and comfortable. Private bathrooms are available at many locations, although shared bathroom facilities may be used in Tadapani or where private rooms are unavailable.

Bedrooms in trekking lodges are generally not heated. Some dining rooms may have heating during colder periods. A warm sleeping bag and suitable winter clothing are therefore recommended for the December trek.

Breakfast is included in Kathmandu and Pokhara. During the Poon Hill Trek and your stay in Chitwan, breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. A welcome dinner is also included on your first evening in Kathmandu. Lunch and dinner in Kathmandu and Pokhara are generally not included unless specifically stated.

Yes. Vegetarian meals are widely available throughout Nepal, including during the trek. Vegan, gluten-free and other dietary requirements can often be accommodated with advance notice, although choices may be more limited in mountain lodges than in Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Chitwan is known for wildlife including the greater one-horned rhinoceros, deer, crocodiles, monkeys and numerous bird species. Bengal tigers also live in the national park, but sightings are rare and cannot be guaranteed.

The exact program depends on the resort and national park schedule, but activities may include a canoe excursion, guided jungle walk, wildlife safari, birdwatching and Tharu cultural experiences. The applicable park entrance fees and nature-guide services are included in the package.

Yes. The required trekking permits and necessary paperwork for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek are included in the tour price.

Yes. Porter service is included for carrying trekkers’ main luggage during the Poon Hill Trek. The standard arrangement is normally one porter for two trekkers, with a maximum combined load of approximately 20 kg.

Yes. The package includes the scheduled domestic flights from Kathmandu to Pokhara and from Bharatpur in Chitwan to Kathmandu, together with the applicable airport transfers according to the itinerary.

Domestic flights in Nepal can occasionally be delayed or cancelled because of weather, visibility or operational conditions. If this happens, Himalayan Dream Team will assist with the most practical alternative available. Any additional expenses caused by delays, cancellations or circumstances beyond our control are normally not included unless otherwise stated.

Yes, the tour can be suitable for active families, provided participants are comfortable with several days of trekking and winter conditions. For families travelling with younger children or older relatives, the itinerary can be reviewed and adjusted according to walking ability and travel preferences.

Yes. The Christmas and New Year Tour in Nepal can be arranged as a private journey for couples, families, friends or small groups. Private arrangements also make it easier to discuss hotel preferences, room upgrades and other itinerary adjustments.

Yes. The itinerary can be customized depending on your available time and interests. Extra nights in Kathmandu, Pokhara or Chitwan, hotel upgrades, additional sightseeing or other Nepal extensions can be arranged on request.

Yes. Travelers should have suitable travel and medical insurance covering trekking, medical treatment, emergency evacuation and helicopter rescue where applicable. Insurance is not included in the package price.

Most eligible international travelers require a Nepal tourist visa. Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival in Kathmandu, but visa rules depend on nationality and can change. Travelers should check the latest Nepal immigration requirements before departure.

Early booking is recommended because Christmas and New Year are popular travel dates in Nepal. Hotels, domestic flights, trekking lodges and jungle resorts can become busy during the festive season, so booking several months in advance gives better availability.

This itinerary is designed around the actual festive dates rather than simply adding Christmas and New Year to a standard Nepal tour. You experience Christmas Eve in Pokhara, Christmas Day in the Annapurna foothills, sunrise from Poon Hill and New Year’s Eve in Chitwan, while also visiting Kathmandu and experiencing Nepal’s culture, mountains and wildlife in one journey.

We are back home safely, we had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday in Nepal in 2024 with Himalayan Dream Team. Christmas Eve in Pokhara was lovely, and the Poon Hill trek was beautiful with clear mountain views. Everything was very well organized, and our guide Hem took very good care of us throughout the trek.

Chitwan was a great way to finish our trip, especially spending New Year's Eve there and enjoying the wildlife activities the next day.
