Upper Mustang Trek vs Annapurna Circuit Trek: Which One Is Right for You?
Choosing between the Upper Mustang Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek can be difficult because both journeys explore extraordinary parts of Nepal's Annapurna region, yet the experiences are remarkably different.
The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into the ancient Kingdom of Lo, a restricted trans-Himalayan region known for the walled city of Lo Manthang, Tibetan Buddhist culture, centuries-old monasteries, cave settlements, colourful cliffs and high-altitude desert landscapes. It normally stays at a considerably lower altitude than the Annapurna Circuit and is also one of Nepal's most interesting trekking options during the summer monsoon.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek, in comparison, is a classic high-altitude Himalayan journey. The trail travels through changing landscapes and mountain communities before reaching Manang and crossing the famous Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m before descending towards Muktinath and Lower Mustang.
So, Upper Mustang Trek vs Annapurna Circuit Trek: which one is right for you? The answer depends on your interests, fitness, trekking experience, available time, budget and travel season. This detailed comparison explains the differences in altitude, difficulty, permits, culture, scenery, weather, accommodation, accessibility and trekking experience to help you make an informed choice.

Where Are Upper Mustang and the Annapurna Circuit?
Both routes are part of the wider Annapurna region of north-central Nepal, but they explore very different geographical and cultural areas.
Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang lies north of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs near the Tibetan border. The region formed part of the former Kingdom of Lo and preserves a distinctive trans-Himalayan culture strongly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism.
The traditional trekking route enters the restricted region from Kagbeni and travels through settlements such as Chhusang, Samar, Ghiling, Ghami and Tsarang before reaching Lo Manthang (approximately 3,840 m).
Lo Manthang, with its earthen walls, monasteries, traditional houses and surrounding cave settlements, is the cultural heart of the journey.
Annapurna Circuit
The Annapurna Circuit travels around a much larger section of the Annapurna massif. The route follows the Marsyangdi Valley towards Chame, Pisang and Manang before gradually climbing into the high Himalaya.
Its defining challenge is the crossing of Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. From the pass, trekkers descend towards Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki Valley in Mustang.
The result is a journey through several climatic zones, landscapes and mountain cultures rather than one geographically concentrated region.
Landscape: Upper Mustang Desert vs Classic Himalayan Circuit
The landscape is one of the clearest differences when comparing Upper Mustang vs Annapurna Circuit.
What Does Upper Mustang Look Like?
Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The environment is dry, open and dramatically different from the green trekking routes found elsewhere in Nepal.
During an Upper Mustang trek, you can expect:
- Red, orange, yellow and brown cliffs
- Wind-eroded rock formations
- Deep canyons and dry river valleys
- Ancient cave complexes
- Wide trans-Himalayan plateaus
- Traditional mud-brick settlements
- Buddhist chortens, mani walls and monasteries
- Views towards the Annapurna, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges
The unusual geology combined with centuries-old settlements makes Upper Mustang particularly attractive to photographers, cultural travellers and trekkers looking for something different from Nepal's classic green mountain trails.
What Does the Annapurna Circuit Look Like?
The Annapurna Circuit is famous for its constantly changing landscape.
Depending on your exact itinerary, the journey can include:
- River valleys
- Terraced farmland
- Pine and rhododendron forests
- Rocky mountain valleys
- Alpine landscapes
- High-altitude desert
- Snow-covered peaks
- Thorong La Pass
- The Kali Gandaki Valley
For trekkers who want to watch the environment change as they gain altitude, the Annapurna Circuit provides exceptional geographical variety.
Culture: Which Trek Offers the Deeper Cultural Experience?
Culture is important on both routes, but it plays a particularly central role in Upper Mustang.
Culture of Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang preserves a strong Tibetan Buddhist cultural heritage. Rather than simply passing cultural sites along the way, much of the trek is about understanding the villages, monasteries and traditions of the former Kingdom of Lo.
Highlights can include:
- Lo Manthang's historic walled settlement
- Jampa, Thubchen and Chodey monasteries
- Ghar Gompa
- Chhoser and surrounding cave settlements
- Ancient chortens and mani walls
- Traditional Loba communities
- Centuries-old trade routes
- Tibetan Buddhist religious traditions
For travellers whose main interests are culture, history, traditional architecture and Buddhism, Upper Mustang offers an especially concentrated experience.
Culture on the Annapurna Circuit
The Annapurna Circuit offers cultural diversity rather than one dominant cultural landscape.
As the route climbs from lower valleys into the high mountains, trekkers encounter communities influenced by Gurung, Manangi, Thakali and Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels and traditional stone settlements become increasingly visible around Manang and the higher sections of the route. After crossing Thorong La, the journey reaches Muktinath, one of Nepal's important pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists.
Altitude: Upper Mustang vs Annapurna Circuit
Altitude is one of the most important differences between these treks.
Upper Mustang Altitude
Much of the Upper Mustang Trek remains between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 metres, although some passes and optional side trips may take you higher depending on the chosen route.
Lo Manthang is approximately 3,840 m.
Altitude still needs to be respected, but a standard Upper Mustang itinerary does not require crossing a pass above 5,000 metres.
Annapurna Circuit Altitude
The Annapurna Circuit reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass.
This makes altitude acclimatization much more important. A well-designed itinerary normally includes sufficient time around Manang (approximately 3,540 m) before continuing towards Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi or High Camp.
Rushing the itinerary simply to reduce the number of trekking days is not recommended.
Which Is Harder: Upper Mustang or Annapurna Circuit?
The Annapurna Circuit is generally the more physically and altitude-demanding trek, primarily because it crosses Thorong La at 5,416 m.
Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty
The Upper Mustang Trek is generally considered moderate. There is no technical climbing, but trekkers should not underestimate the journey.
Challenges can include:
- Several consecutive walking days
- Repeated ascents and descents
- Dry and dusty trails
- Strong afternoon winds
- Limited shade
- Remote terrain
- Walking at elevations around 3,000–4,000 m
Good general fitness and experience with regular hiking are useful.
Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty
The Annapurna Circuit is generally considered moderate to challenging.
The most demanding section is the Thorong La crossing. Trekkers usually begin early in the morning and climb into an environment where cold, wind, snow and reduced oxygen can significantly increase the physical challenge.
Proper acclimatization, steady pacing and good physical preparation are essential.
Thorong La vs Lo Manthang: The Main Difference in One Comparison
If you want to understand these two journeys quickly, compare their defining destinations.
Thorong La – 5,416 m
For many Annapurna Circuit trekkers, reaching Thorong La Pass is the major objective. Standing among the prayer flags at 5,416 m after a demanding climb is a memorable physical and high-altitude achievement.
Lo Manthang – Approximately 3,840 m
The main destination of Upper Mustang is not a mountain summit or extreme pass. It is Lo Manthang, the historic walled capital of the former Kingdom of Lo.
The reward comes from exploring monasteries, narrow lanes, traditional architecture, nearby villages and caves while understanding a distinctive Himalayan culture.
Annapurna Circuit is centred more strongly on the journey across a high Himalayan pass. Upper Mustang is centred more strongly on landscape, history and culture.
Best Time for Upper Mustang Trek
One of Upper Mustang's greatest advantages is its unusually long trekking season.
Because the region lies in the Himalayan rain shadow, it receives considerably less summer monsoon rainfall than most trekking areas south of the main Himalayan range.
The main periods to consider are:
- March to May: Comfortable spring trekking and generally good visibility.
- June to August: A particularly interesting period because Upper Mustang is comparatively dry during Nepal's monsoon.
- September to November: Popular autumn trekking months with generally favourable conditions.
Winter is considerably colder, and some local businesses may close as residents move to lower elevations.
Best Time for Annapurna Circuit Trek
The two main seasons for the Annapurna Circuit are:
- Spring: March to May
- Autumn: September to November
Spring brings warmer temperatures and flowering vegetation at lower elevations, while autumn is popular for generally clear Himalayan views.
Winter trekking can be possible, but snow and severe weather may make Thorong La difficult or temporarily unsafe. During the summer monsoon, lower parts of the route can experience rain, cloud, muddy trails and transportation disruptions.
Upper Mustang During the Monsoon: A Major Advantage
If you can travel only during June, July or August, Upper Mustang deserves special consideration.
The Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges block much of the moisture travelling north from the Indian subcontinent, creating the rain-shadow environment of Mustang.
Upper Mustang therefore receives considerably less monsoon rainfall than many other parts of Nepal.
This does not mean the entire journey is guaranteed to be dry. Kathmandu, Pokhara and the access routes through lower Nepal can still experience monsoon rain, cloud, landslides, road delays or flight disruptions. Flexibility remains important.
Upper Mustang Permit vs Annapurna Circuit Permits
The permit requirements are an important practical difference.
Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit
Upper Mustang is a Restricted Area of Nepal and requires a special Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
Under the current permit structure, the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit costs USD 50 per person per day. This is different from the previous system under which travellers commonly paid a compulsory USD 500 minimum for the first ten days.
The permit can now be issued according to the approved number of travel days, making shorter itineraries more flexible than under the former system.
An Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and other applicable trekking documentation are also required.
Because permit regulations can change, Himalayan Dream Team checks the latest official requirements when arranging each trip.
Annapurna Circuit Permits
The standard Annapurna Circuit is not a Restricted Area trek, so the Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit is not required.
Trekkers need the applicable Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and trekking documentation required under Nepal's current regulations.
Under Nepal's current TIMS provisions, the Annapurna Circuit is among the routes requiring trekkers to travel with a licensed trekking guide and obtain the required TIMS documentation through a registered trekking agency.
Do You Need a Guide?
Yes. Under current trekking regulations, both the Annapurna Circuit and Upper Mustang fall within trekking routes where licensed guide arrangements apply.
Beyond regulations, an experienced local guide can be especially valuable for:
- Altitude monitoring
- Weather and trail decisions
- Permit procedures
- Accommodation arrangements
- Communication with local communities
- Understanding monasteries and cultural traditions
- Emergency coordination
In Upper Mustang, where culture is such an important part of the journey, travelling with someone who understands the region can add considerably to the experience.
Which Trek Costs More?
Upper Mustang generally costs more than the Annapurna Circuit.
The main reasons include:
- Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit fees
- Remote transportation and logistics
- Flights or overland transportation to Mustang
- Restricted-area arrangements
- Guide and support services
The Annapurna Circuit generally has lower permit expenses and a larger network of lodges and transport options.
However, the final price of either journey depends on the number of days, group size, accommodation level, transportation, guide and porter services, domestic flights and additional sightseeing.
Accommodation and Food
Both routes are generally completed using local tea houses and mountain lodges.
Accommodation in Upper Mustang
Upper Mustang has comfortable local lodges in the main settlements, although facilities are naturally simpler than hotels in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
Typical trekking meals include dal bhat, soups, noodles, potatoes, rice, momos, eggs and other locally available dishes.
Accommodation on the Annapurna Circuit
The Annapurna Circuit has one of Nepal's most established tea-house networks. Larger trekking centres such as Chame and Manang generally provide more accommodation and menu choices.
Facilities become simpler as you travel higher towards Thorong La.
Which Trek Is Less Crowded?
Upper Mustang is generally the quieter of the two routes.
Its restricted status, permit cost and remote location naturally limit visitor numbers. During festivals such as Tiji, however, Lo Manthang becomes considerably livelier.
The Annapurna Circuit is one of Nepal's best-known trekking routes. During the main spring and autumn seasons, popular villages such as Manang, Thorong Phedi and Muktinath can be busy.
Some travellers enjoy the social trekking atmosphere of the Annapurna Circuit, while others prefer Mustang's quieter environment.
Road Development: What You Should Know Before Booking
Road construction has changed sections of both Upper Mustang and the Annapurna Circuit.
Some older blogs and guidebooks describe routes as they existed many years ago and therefore do not always represent the present trekking experience.
Today, thoughtful itinerary planning is important. Where practical, alternative walking trails can be used to reduce time spent walking directly on jeep roads.
At Himalayan Dream Team, we plan routes according to current trail and road conditions rather than simply repeating old itineraries.
Mountain Views: Upper Mustang vs Annapurna Circuit
Upper Mustang Mountain Views
Upper Mustang offers views towards peaks including the Annapurna, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges, but the mountains are only part of the attraction.
The combination of snowy peaks, barren valleys, colourful cliffs and traditional settlements creates the distinctive Mustang landscape.
Annapurna Circuit Mountain Views
The Annapurna Circuit places greater emphasis on close Himalayan mountain scenery.
Depending on the route and weather, views can include:
- Annapurna II
- Annapurna III
- Annapurna IV
- Gangapurna
- Tilicho Peak
- Dhaulagiri
- Manaslu and surrounding peaks from selected sections
If your main dream is a classic high-mountain Himalayan trekking experience, the Annapurna Circuit offers extraordinary scenery.
Which Trek Is Better for Photography?
Both are excellent photography destinations, but the subjects are very different.
Choose Upper Mustang if you want to photograph:
- Lo Manthang
- Ancient monasteries
- Tibetan Buddhist culture
- Cave settlements
- Traditional Mustang villages
- Red and ochre cliffs
- High-altitude desert landscapes
- Tiji or Yartung cultural festivals
Choose the Annapurna Circuit if you want to photograph:
- High Himalayan peaks
- Thorong La Pass
- Alpine landscapes
- Forests and river valleys
- Manang
- Traditional mountain villages
- Changing vegetation and climatic zones
Which Trek Is Better for First-Time Himalayan Trekkers?
A fit first-time Himalayan trekker can consider either journey, but the challenges are different.
Upper Mustang avoids the extreme altitude of Thorong La, making it attractive to travellers who want a multi-day Himalayan trek without crossing above 5,000 m.
The Annapurna Circuit requires more serious preparation for high altitude. A first-time trekker can complete it successfully with good fitness, sufficient acclimatization, a sensible itinerary and professional guidance.
Previous multi-day hiking experience is useful for both.
Upper Mustang or Annapurna Circuit for Older Travellers?
Age alone does not determine whether someone can complete either trek. Fitness, health, previous hiking experience, walking pace and acclimatization are more important.
Upper Mustang can be especially interesting for active older travellers because:
- Its main trekking route remains lower than Thorong La.
- It focuses heavily on culture and landscape rather than reaching an extreme altitude.
- Some itineraries can combine walking with jeep transportation.
- Rest and exploration days can be incorporated around Lo Manthang.
Travellers with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before undertaking high-altitude travel.
Can You Visit Upper Mustang Without Doing the Full Trek?
Yes. This is another important difference.
Road access means travellers can experience much of Upper Mustang by private 4WD jeep. This is particularly suitable for families, photographers, mature travellers or visitors who want to experience Mustang's culture without completing a full trekking itinerary.
Himalayan Dream Team also operates cultural festival journeys such as the Upper Mustang Yartung Festival Jeep Tour, combining road travel, light walking and cultural exploration.
Tiji Festival: A Special Reason to Choose Upper Mustang
If your travel dates fall around the annual Tiji Festival, Upper Mustang becomes an entirely different cultural experience.
The festival is held in Lo Manthang and includes Buddhist rituals, traditional masked dances, music and community gatherings. It is one of the most important cultural events in Upper Mustang.
Travellers interested specifically in the festival can consider the Mustang Tiji Festival Trek, which combines trekking through Upper Mustang with time in Lo Manthang during the festival celebrations.
Yartung Festival: Upper Mustang in Summer
Another fascinating cultural event is the Yartung Festival, traditionally celebrated around the end of the summer season.
Celebrations can include horse racing, religious ceremonies, traditional music, dancing and community gatherings.
Because Yartung takes place during the summer period, it also demonstrates one of Mustang's unusual advantages: its rain-shadow location makes summer travel more practical than in many other trekking regions of Nepal.
For travellers who prefer driving and light walking instead of a full trek, see our Upper Mustang Yartung Festival Jeep Tour.
Can You Combine Upper Mustang and the Annapurna Circuit?
Yes, but you need sufficient time.
The two routes connect geographically around Muktinath, Kagbeni and the Kali Gandaki Valley. After crossing Thorong La, Annapurna Circuit trekkers descend to Muktinath and Lower Mustang. Upper Mustang begins north of Kagbeni beyond the restricted-area checkpoint.
This makes it possible to design an extended journey combining Thorong La, Muktinath, Kagbeni and Upper Mustang.
Such a trip is considerably longer and requires the appropriate Upper Mustang permits, but for travellers with enough time it offers a remarkable combination of high-altitude trekking and Mustang culture.

21. What makes Upper Mustang different from other Nepal treks?
Upper Mustang combines a restricted trans-Himalayan landscape, the former Kingdom of Lo, Tibetan Buddhist culture, ancient cave settlements, walled Lo Manthang and a rain-shadow climate. The experience is as much cultural and historical as it is a trek.
22. Can I combine the Annapurna Circuit with Upper Mustang?
Yes. With sufficient time and the correct permits, an extended itinerary can cross Thorong La, continue through Muktinath and Kagbeni and then enter Upper Mustang.
Final Thoughts: Two Very Different Himalayan Journeys
The Upper Mustang Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trek should not be viewed simply as two versions of the same trek. They offer very different ways to experience the Himalayas.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is defined by changing landscapes, high mountains, acclimatization and the challenge of crossing Thorong La at 5,416 m. It suits trekkers who want a classic high-altitude Himalayan journey with a significant physical objective.
The Upper Mustang Trek offers something very different: Lo Manthang, Tibetan Buddhist heritage, ancient monasteries, cave settlements, colourful desert cliffs and the history of the former Kingdom of Lo. Its rain-shadow location also makes it one of Nepal's most interesting trekking regions during the summer months.
For travellers interested in an even deeper cultural experience, Upper Mustang can also be visited during the Tiji Festival or explored with less strenuous walking on our Yartung Festival Jeep Tour.
The right choice therefore depends on what you want from your time in Nepal: a high mountain pass, ancient culture, physical challenge, photography, quieter trails, summer trekking or a combination of these experiences.
